From Ancona to San Sebastian, without stopping and it needs to be said loudly, because there is a lady who after winning three Italian titles at the recent championships held in the central of Italy, flew in the Basque Country for the podium position in all three races of the 60, 200 and 400 meters in sprint races. A lady to whom time does absolutely impression, indeed dominates: Mazzenga Emma, born in 1933, in Padua.
Emma ‘Mimma’ Mazzenga is undoubtedly among the athletes who are most representative of the Italian masters sports movement and her results speak for themselves. This ultra competitive lady who, as she herself once said in an interview, takes to the track to win and to feel the adrenalin rush unleashed by competitive action, not just to keep fit, has been at the top of women’s masters athletics for more than 20 years. Among her enormous list of achievements, in addition to numerous Italian titles and records, she also has five world and fifteen European titles.
For Emma Mazzenga the track and speed are passions which started a long time ago when, as a twenty five year-old, she came fourth in the Italian Championships, showing that she was an athlete of a very high calibre. Then marriage, children and her career as a teacher forced this determined Paduan woman to set aside her passion for athletics. But the passion never died, and at the age of 53 she returned to competition and has not looked back since.
In 2008 at the age of 75 she set two amazing times which gave her world records in the 400 metres (1’25.2”) and in the 800 metres (3’25.18”). A real ’lioness’ of the track, in keeping with her star sign. A woman and athlete, who lives sport with the same intensity and motivation that we will find in all the athletes who will be competing at the World Masters Games in Turin. Live sport in order to live life to the full and defy the passing years, just like Mimma Mazzenga.
